In yet another sign that copper thieves are unlikely to be members of Mensa, one power company is trying to spread the word on what seem obvious: trying to make off with a live copper wire could a quite a shock, and even kill you.

Three men have been accused
Three men have been accused of stealing copper from a recycler and attempting to sell it to a David J. Joseph Co. Subsidiary, according to the Charlotte County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office.

Using a Georgia statue that says any buyer of scrap is a “secondary metals recycler”, Gwinnett County Police Department has arrested a man with a van full of recyclables described as mostly catalytic converters and copper wire.

Hopcott Rd complaint
June 17, 2:37 pm, 7500-block of Hopcott Rd: Complainant reported a break-in had occurred at approximately 1:17 am. It appears two unknown makes were captured on security cameras walking through the warehouse and removing items. The value of the theft is approximately $3,600 in electronic equipment from one business an $4,000 in copper wire from another.

Cable theft cuts service to 1,000 customers
Nearly 1,000 customers in Surey were left without phone, Internet or television access becasue of a cable theft that occurred Friday morning Telus said.
Five cables were cut and stolen off poles on 144th Street near the Fraser Hwy around 3 a.m. Firday. Parts of shredded fibre-optics cable were left on the ground, but four copper cables are gone.

Southwire falls victim to $500,000 copper theft
An audacious theft of some $500,000 worth of copper rod from Southwire Co. has shocked the copper fabrication industry, raising new concerns about security.
The April 29 heist occurred at a copper rod mill in Carrollton, Ga., where three 18-wheeler trucks arrived at different times throughout the day to collect copper rod scheduled for delivery to Indiana, Carrollton Police Lt. James Perry said.

Vancouver Billboards Stripped for Aluminum
Vancouver sign companies say they've stepped up security because thieves are stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of aluminum from billboards in the area.
David Struthers, who speaks for CBS Outdoor Canada, said his company has lost 18 billboards since the first week of April. He estimates it will cost around $300,000 to replace them.

Thieves strip aluminum slats from billboards for scrap metal
Special Alert,
CBC & CHEK TV will be covering the theft of Aluminum Sign Board Slats during their broacast tonight before the Canucks Hockey game.
The Vancouver Sun reported today that more than 30 Vancouver-area billboards have been stripped of their aluminum slats in broad daylight in the past month by thieves posing as workers.
The billboards being targeted are the rotating kind that periodically flip between three different advertisements.
There is a reward being offered for information leading to the arrest of the parties involved.

Copper thieves strike again
Copper thieves caused $2.8-milion worth of damage to a
BC Hydro substation this week as the metal's rising
market value prompts an incresae in such thefts.
A Canada Line employee checking tracks nea the substation,
located in the 400-block of Kent Street in southeast Vancouver, called police around 2 a.m. Monday after witnessing several men loading copper wire into a van.
